All Evacuations Lifted as Crews Tame El Dorado County Vegetation Fire

On Sunday afternoon a brush fire ignited behind a home on Miners Valley Road in the Pilot Hill area of El Dorado County. By the time crews arrived the flames were already racing up the slope, licking the sides of nearby houses and sending a thin plume of smoke over the ridge.

Cal Fire battalion chief Derek Evans told KCRA 3 that the fire had scorched about 95 acres and was threatening six to eight structures. "I look outside and over here along the ridge there’s like 10‑foot flames, just going everywhere," recalled Grant Leisure, a resident who watched the blaze race toward his property.

Before the fire‑retardant drops came in, Leisure and a co‑worker, Macario, sprang into action. "We threw on boots, pants, a hard hat, grabbed a water truck, shovels, an excavator… and we went out into the field," he said. The two men worked under a low‑flying retardant plane, dousing their own yard and even their pool in a desperate bid to protect what they could.

Firefighters responded with a mix of aerial drops, bulldozers and hand crews. By early evening the blaze was about 50 % contained, and the forward spread had halted. Hand crews were slated to stay on the scene through the night to mop up any lingering hotspots.

Evacuation warnings had been issued for roughly seven properties in the Pilot Hill community, but the sheriff’s office lifted all orders by 6:45 p.m. Residents were allowed to return home, though some voiced frustration that they never received the emergency alert on their phones.

"We didn’t know about the alert until neighbors told us," said Steven Viani, a local homeowner. The county’s sheriff’s office did not respond to follow‑up questions before the story went to press.

No structural damage was reported, and Leasure tried to find humor in the ordeal. "At least we won’t have to mow the grass anymore," he joked, eyes still on the smoldering ridge.

As of the latest update, the fire remains 50 % contained, with air drops continuing to slow any further spread while ground crews build a containment line around the remaining hot spots.
