A new AI‑driven sleep test may flag Alzheimer’s years before memory loss shows up

Using a custom AI algorithm, they taught the computer to spot subtle shifts in the EEG signal that corresponded to levels of classic Alzheimer’s biomarkers—beta‑amyloid, tau and neurofilament light—in the participants’ cerebrospinal fluid. The study compared 42 people diagnosed with mild‑to‑moderate Alzheimer’s to 58 cognitively healthy adults.
The results were surprisingly clear. The AI could separate the two groups with a high degree of accuracy, essentially reading the brain’s nightly “maintenance report” and flagging those whose waste‑clearing processes were going awry. What’s more, the system identified three distinct biological sub‑groups among the Alzheimer’s patients, hinting that the disease may follow several different molecular routes even early on.
Why does this matter? Because by the time memory lapses become obvious, the brain has already suffered years of damage. Current diagnostic tools—blood tests, PET scans, spinal taps—are either costly, invasive, or simply not widely accessible. A sleep‑based screen could be done at home, is painless, and might be rolled out at a fraction of the price of existing methods.
“Our goal isn’t to replace doctors or current tests,” says Viñarás, “but to give clinicians an extra, easy‑to‑use window into what’s happening inside the brain before the patient even notices a problem.” The hope is that, paired with future blood‑based biomarkers, a simple overnight EEG could become part of routine health check‑ups for older adults.
Beyond early detection, the work underscores how interdisciplinary collaboration—neuroscience, sleep medicine, and engineering—can open fresh pathways in the fight against neurodegeneration. As new drugs aim to intervene before symptoms erupt, tools like this AI‑driven sleep test could be the missing piece that makes early treatment a realistic possibility for millions.
