When we think of fire services, our minds often jump straight to blazing infernos and dramatic rescues from burning buildings. And while those critical incidents are undoubtedly a huge part of their job, the reality of what Ahmedabad's brave firefighters tackle day in and day out is far, far broader, and frankly, quite astonishing. Since April 2024, their tireless efforts have already resulted in the saving of a remarkable 678 lives – that's 678 individuals who got to go home, thanks to their swift and skilled intervention.

But that's just one facet of their extraordinary commitment. Beyond the immediate life-saving acts, the Ahmedabad Fire Services have been on the front lines for a staggering 3,606 rescue operations. Imagine the sheer variety of emergencies contained within that number! It’s not just about battling flames; it's about being there for the city in countless moments of crisis. They responded to 376 fire calls, certainly, each one a race against time and danger. Yet, their mandate extends so much further, encompassing a spectrum of unexpected challenges that truly highlights their versatility.

Consider, for instance, the more tender side of their work: they’ve rescued 188 birds and 112 animals, often from precarious situations. Who else would you call when a stray kitten is trapped, or a bird tangled in power lines? These aren't minor incidents; they reflect a deep-seated commitment to all forms of life within the community. And it doesn't stop there. When fierce winds bring down mighty trees, blocking roads and posing hazards, it’s the fire service that responds, having dealt with 134 such incidents. Road accidents, tragically common, also see them on the scene, having answered 38 calls to assist and extricate victims.

The scale of their daily grind is truly eye-opening. M.F. Dastoor, the Fire Chief, oversees a team that is constantly on high alert, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are literally the city’s safety net. In just one recent 24-hour period, for example, the control room (reachable by dialing 101) received a total of 53 calls. This included 10 fire calls, 12 incidents of fallen trees, 2 road accidents, 2 building collapses – a stark reminder of urban dangers – and even a well/borewell incident and an electric shock case. On top of that, a whopping 25 'miscellaneous' calls illustrate the sheer unpredictability of their job. They’re problem-solvers, pure and simple, handling everything from the dramatic to the uniquely bizarre, totalling 4,902 calls for service since April.
