Activist Sonam Wangchuk Sets Three Conditions to End His Hunger Strike from a Hospital Bed

Writing from a hospital bed on July 20, the 59‑year‑old activist Sonam Wangchuk posted a concise yet firm note on his X account, spelling out exactly when he would be ready to stop his ongoing hunger strike.

The first demand is the simplest – the central government must publicly acknowledge its role in the recent failures of the education system, especially the alleged examination‑paper leaks that have rattled students across the country.

If that acknowledgment does not materialise, Wangchuk offers two alternative routes. The second condition asks that he and the leadership of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) be allowed to reach Parliament. Once there, he wants elected representatives from various parties to give a clear, written assurance that the issue will be raised on the floor of the house.

The third possibility recognises his fragile health. Should his condition prevent travel, he insists that MPs and party leaders come to the hospital, sit with him, and provide the same guarantee in person.

"My fast will continue till after the Sansad Chalo march," Wangchuk tweeted, adding a photo of his note. "It will be broken only under the circumstances I have listed."

The timing of the statement is significant – it coincides with the CJP’s planned march to Parliament, adding urgency to his demands. So far, the central government has not issued any public response.

Wangchuk’s three‑point ultimatum underscores a broader frustration among activists who feel that the education sector’s grievances are being swept under the rug. Whether the government will meet his demands, or if his health will force a different outcome, remains to be seen.
