Three sources familiar with the event, plus the documents ProPublica examined, corroborate the claim that Kremlev covered “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in costs. The same sources note that Kremlev has recently travelled to China as part of a delegation accompanying Putin, and that the Russian leader recently honored him with the Order of Friendship – a state award that, in Washington, often raises eyebrows.

When asked about the report, a Trump Jr. spokesperson simply said, “Umar is a personal friend of Don.” Kremlev’s press office echoed that sentiment, describing the two as having met “a couple of years ago” through a mutual hunting‑and‑boxing enthusiast friend. No business ties were disclosed, and no comment was offered on why a Russian oligarch would foot such a lavish bill for an American political family’s private celebration.

The lack of clarity is what fuels the controversy.
