A Quarter-Century of Global Harmony: Reston's Multicultural Festival Celebrates 25 Years

Can you believe it's been twenty-five years? This Saturday, September 19th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the heart of our community at Reston Town Center will once again burst with an incredible celebration of diversity and culture as the Reston Multicultural Festival marks its silver anniversary! Seriously, a whole quarter-century of bringing the world to Reston – how wonderful is that?

It all started with a simple, yet profound vision. Back in the day, Reston residents Ellen Graves and Margaret Boyd dreamt of a festival that would truly reflect our community's rich tapestry of cultures. Their passion blossomed into this beloved annual event, and here we are, two and a half decades later, still celebrating their incredible foresight and dedication. It's a beautiful testament to the power of a good idea, wouldn't you agree?

Of course, an event this grand doesn't just happen on its own, does it? The brilliant minds at the Reston Community Center are the main presenters, tirelessly working to bring everything together. They're joined by fantastic partners like the Reston Town Center Association and co-host BXP, who all play a crucial role. And let's not forget the Reston Association, which expertly coordinates all the wonderful volunteers, or the National Council for the Traditional Arts and Virginia Folklife Program, lending their invaluable artistic support. It's truly a community-wide effort, showcasing the best of Reston's collaborative spirit.

And speaking of recognition, our beloved festival even caught the eye of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, who honored its 25th anniversary with a special proclamation on August 25. That's a pretty big deal! When Saturday arrives, the festival will kick off with an opening ceremony featuring remarks from Bill Bouie, the Chair of the Reston Community Center Board of Governors, and BeBe Nguyen, the Executive Director of RCC. Imagine Beverly A. Cosham leading us all in a heartfelt rendition of "God Bless America," followed by the beautiful voices of the South Lakes High School Chorus performing the National Anthem. It sounds like quite the event itself!

There's the Pavilion Stage, always a lively hub; the Park Stage over at Reston Town Square Park, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere; and the Cultural Conversations Stage on Library Street, where you can delve deeper into the stories behind the art. From lively dance troupes to captivating musicians, there’s truly something for every taste.

Beyond the stages, Market Street will transform into a global bazaar, bustling with over sixty artisan vendors and community organizations. Just to whet your appetite a little more, this year's lineup boasts some truly fantastic talent. Get ready for the soulful sounds of Elsa Howell, the delightful tunes of Gina Dilg and the Mustard Cutters, and the authentic "Music from the Crooked Road" brought to us by Eddie Bond & the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters. We'll also be treated to the mesmerizing performances of the New York Korean Performing Arts Center, along with traditional Irish music from Billy McComiskey, Patrick Olwell, and Gerry Milnes.
