Indeed, the nation—and particularly the province of Sindh—pauses to mourn the passing of a true stalwart, Aftab Shaban Mirani. He was, to put it simply, a name synonymous with public service and a dedicated life in the sometimes tumultuous, often demanding, world of Pakistani politics. Mirani, a former Chief Minister of Sindh and a federal minister, breathed his last in Karachi at the grand age of 83, leaving behind a remarkable legacy spanning decades.

For some time, it’s true, he had been ailing, admitted to a private hospital in the bustling heart of Karachi. But even in his quiet final days, one imagines his mind must have drifted to the corridors of power, the passionate debates, and the countless decisions that defined his long career. His journey through public life was, you could say, nothing short of extensive; he served two terms in the Sindh Assembly way back in 1970 and 1977, a testament to his early electoral strength and connection with the people.

His commitment was evident in his repeated electoral successes, seeing him elected to the National Assembly in 1988, 1990, 1993, and then again in 2008 and 2013. President Asif Ali Zardari, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, and Sindh’s caretaker Chief Minister Maqbool Baqar were among the first to express their profound sorrow. Leaders like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Faryal Talpur also joined in paying tribute, all unanimously acknowledging Mirani’s significant contributions to democracy and his tireless service to the nation. His funeral prayers, solemn and respectful, were held at the Police Headquarters in Garden, Karachi, before he was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard in Mirpur Bhutto, Kamber-Shahdadkot.
