A Paw-some Legacy: Venezuela Honors Hero Dog Tsunami with Bronze Statue

Imagine a dog, a true canine hero, whose courage and incredible skill have literally pulled people from the brink of disaster. That, my friends, is the story of Tsunami, an extraordinary Border Collie from Venezuela, who recently received a magnificent bronze statue in his honor. It’s a truly touching tribute to a working dog whose life, against all odds, began with hardship but soared to incredible heights of service, ultimately saving countless lives.

The statue, beautifully crafted and unveiled in late September 2026 in Maracaibo, serves as a permanent, enduring reminder of Tsunami's remarkable career. For many, this dedication felt like a fitting farewell, marking his well-earned retirement from the intense, demanding world of search and rescue. He bravely located and helped to rescue at least twenty-six people trapped beneath the suffocating rubble. Jorge Beens, the visionary founder and director of K-SAR ECID – Venezuela's premier canine disaster intervention team – has been with Tsunami almost from the very beginning. Back in 2017, as a mere 8-month-old puppy, Tsunami was rescued from an abusive and neglectful home in Caracas by the Asociación Pro Defensa de los Animales (APROA). Who would've thought that this abandoned pup, easily recognizable by his striking heterochromia – one beautiful brown eye and one piercing blue eye – would grow to be such a national treasure?
