A New Chess Star Shines: V.S. Rathanvel Crowned India's 99th Grandmaster!

The Indian chess scene is buzzing with excitement! On a truly memorable July 18, 2026, a new star officially joined the ranks of the elite, as V.S. Rathanvel, a brilliant mind from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, was officially crowned India's 99th Grandmaster. What a moment that must have been for him, achieving this prestigious title at the 3rd Guwahati Smart City International Open 2026!

This monumental achievement wasn't just handed to him; it was hard-earned. Rathanvel, who is just 25 years old, crossed that elusive 2500 Elo rating mark — the gold standard for Grandmaster status — during the Guwahati tournament. He entered the event with a live rating of 2492, poised on the edge, and then, with sheer determination, he pushed through, adding a crucial 8 Elo points to seal the deal. Imagine the pressure, the focus required for such a feat!

But Rathanvel's journey to this pinnacle has been a long one, marked by years of dedication and quiet perseverance. It wasn't an overnight success, mind you. He showed immense promise early on, even bagging a bronze medal at the World Youth U-10 championship. For years, he was known as one of India's strongest International Masters, constantly pushing boundaries. He had already completed the prerequisite three GM norms back in 2021 and 2022, securing two of them at the First Saturday and Vezerkepzo tournaments in Hungary in September 2021, and the crucial third at another First Saturday event in Budapest in March 2022. He was just waiting for that final Elo push.

Of course, no Grandmaster reaches such heights alone. Rathanvel credits a dedicated team of coaches – Grandmasters Vishnu Prasanna, Narayanan Srinath, Shyam Sundar, and Sundarrajan Kidambi – for guiding him along the way.
