A New Chapter in School Safety for Porter

There's a palpable sense of renewed security and community spirit buzzing around Discovery Charter School in the Town of Porter, Indiana. Why, you ask? Well, it's quite the milestone, really! The school is officially welcoming its very first School Resource Officer, Porter Police Sergeant Tawni Komisarcik.

This isn't just any new hire; it represents a significant, proactive step towards fostering an even safer environment for students and staff alike. The official announcement came through on September 17, 2026, heralding a new era of collaboration between the school and the Town of Porter, specifically with the dedicated folks at the Porter Police Department.

Superintendent Kevin Zeck of Discovery Charter School shared his enthusiasm, emphasizing how crucial this partnership is. "Having a dedicated SRO like Sergeant Komisarcik on campus means more than just a visible police presence," he explained, "it's about building relationships, offering mentorship, and proactively addressing any safety concerns that might arise. It's truly about cultivating a secure and supportive learning atmosphere."

It’s worth noting that this vital initiative didn't just appear out of thin air; it’s largely thanks to a generous grant received through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Secured School Safety Grant. This funding has made it possible to bring Sergeant Komisarcik on board, with her official duties kicking off this coming Monday, November 2nd – yes, that's in 2026, making this a timely and impactful development for the school community.

So, as students, parents, and staff look ahead to Sergeant Komisarcik's arrival, there's a collective feeling of optimism. This appointment isn't just about security; it's about embedding a trained, compassionate officer directly into the school's fabric, someone who can be a resource, a mentor, and a friendly face. It’s a wonderful example of a community coming together to prioritize the well-being of its youngest citizens.
