A New Chapter for Conservation: Turtle Back Zoo Welcomes Endangered Lemurs to a Reimagined Habitat

Visitors in Spring 2025 will have the opportunity to marvel at several captivating lemur species, including the iconic Ring-tailed Lemurs with their distinctive striped tails, the vibrant Red Ruffed Lemurs, and the striking Black and White Ruffed Lemurs.

Hailing exclusively from the forests of Madagascar, these primates face critical threats in their native habitats, making conservation efforts like those at Turtle Back Zoo absolutely vital.

The decision to repurpose the old exhibit follows the successful relocation of Turtle Back Zoo’s sea lions in 2020.

These magnificent marine mammals now enjoy a sprawling, state-of-the-art $10 million habitat known as "Sea Lion Sound," which offers them far more space and advanced features than their previous 1999-built home. This freed up a valuable space, allowing the zoo to envision a new purpose that aligns perfectly with its conservation mission.

Zoo Director Brinley emphasized that while the original habitat served its purpose for many years, it was no longer ideal for the long-term well-being of the sea lions.
