A Miracle Unfolds: Nagpur Woman Returns Home After 36 Years, Presumed Dead

In a story that sounds straight out of a Bollywood blockbuster, a woman from Nagpur, who vanished without a trace 36 years ago and was tragically presumed dead by her grieving family, has made a miraculous return home. This astounding reunion has brought an overwhelming wave of shock, disbelief, and immense joy to her relatives, who had long performed her last rites and moved on with a heavy heart.

Vilasini Patankar, now known as Nirmala Yadav during her time away, disappeared from her Nagpur residence in 1988.

Her family, after years of futile searching and holding onto a glimmer of hope, eventually accepted the unbearable truth of her presumed demise. They performed her funeral rites, a poignant closure to a chapter of profound loss, never imagining that fate had a different plan in store.

The extraordinary turn of events began to unfold thanks to the dedicated efforts of PSI Rekha More from Nagpur’s Sadar police station.

Acting on a crucial tip-off, More contacted the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), a mental health facility in Delhi. It was there, amidst countless individuals seeking care, that a woman matching Vilasini's description had been living under the name Nirmala Yadav.

The journey to confirmation was meticulous and deeply emotional.

Prakash Patankar, Vilasini’s brother, travelled to Delhi to meet the woman. While her appearance had inevitably changed over three decades, a small, unique mole on her chest and a distinctive scar on her left leg, cherished family marks, served as undeniable proof. It was indeed Vilasini, his long-lost sister, returned from the brink of oblivion.

The reunion at the Patankar household in Nagpur was a scene of unparalleled emotion.

Tears flowed freely – tears of disbelief, tears of joy, and tears of relief for a family that had endured decades of unanswered questions. What happened to Vilasini during those 36 years remains largely a mystery, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of hope.
