A Life Cut Short: Husband Arrested in Lucknow for Wife's Dowry Suicide

In a truly heartbreaking turn of events from Lucknow, a young woman's life has been tragically cut short, allegedly driven to suicide by persistent dowry demands and harassment. Her husband, Amit Yadav, has since been taken into custody by local police, facing serious charges related to abetment of suicide and cruelty.

The victim, identified as Sonam, was found to have ended her life on March 26, hanging herself at her residence in Sector-A, Eldeco Colony, PGI area. It’s a somber tale, one that sadly echoes a struggle many women still face. According to the complaint filed by her distraught father, Mahendra Pal, Sonam had been subjected to relentless mental and physical torture since her marriage to Amit in June 2022.

Mahendra Pal's complaint paints a grim picture. He alleges that his daughter was constantly harassed not just by Amit, but also by her mother-in-law, Gyan Devi, and sister-in-law, Preeti Yadav. The crux of their cruel demands? A new car and a substantial sum of five lakh rupees – an exorbitant price to pay for a marital bond that should have been built on love and respect. Sonam, in her desperation, had reportedly returned to her parents' home on several occasions, seeking refuge from the escalating abuse, only to return in hopes of things improving.

The final, fateful day began with yet another argument on March 26. Amit Yadav, after the altercation, left for work, leaving Sonam behind in a state of profound distress. Shortly thereafter, she made a desperate call to her father, tearfully recounting the continued harassment. Mahendra Pal, sensing the gravity of the situation, urged her to come home immediately. He promised to pick her up, rushing against time, but tragically, it was too late. Before he could reach her, Sonam had taken the irreversible step, succumbing to the immense pressure she had endured.

Following the harrowing discovery and Mahendra Pal’s detailed complaint, the police swung into action. An FIR was promptly lodged at the PGI police station. The charges are grave, falling under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), alongside relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Inspector Manoj Singh confirmed Amit Yadav's arrest, noting that efforts are now underway to apprehend his mother, Gyan Devi, and sister, Preeti Yadav, who are currently absconding. It’s a stark reminder of the devastating impact of dowry-related violence, a scourge that continues to plague society.
