A Legacy of Dedication: Remembering Genesee County's Michael J. Carr

Flint and the entire Genesee County community are certainly feeling a profound sense of loss with the passing of Michael J. Carr, who left us peacefully on August 24, 2026, at the age of 90, in Grand Blanc. He wasn't just a name; he was a familiar face, a steady presence, and, for so many, a true embodiment of dedication to the region he served with such commitment.

For almost three decades, Michael Carr, often known simply as Michael John Carr, was the man at the helm of the Genesee County Clerk's office. He first stepped into that vital role after being elected way back in 1976. Now, that’s a remarkable tenure, isn't it? Though, his journey in public service wasn’t entirely confined to Genesee County. He took a fascinating, albeit brief, detour in the 1980s, stepping up as the Michigan State Lottery Commissioner starting in 1983. And then, he ventured even further afield, heading south to become President of the Louisiana Lottery in 1991. Quite an impressive career trajectory, if you think about it.

But, as is often the case with individuals deeply rooted in their community, Genesee County ultimately called him home. Michael Carr returned with renewed vigor, successfully winning re-election as County Clerk in 1993. He continued to serve with that characteristic unwavering commitment until he finally retired in 2012. Imagine that – a career spanning generations, ensuring the smooth operation of essential services for countless citizens.

Beyond his official duties, Michael was, quite frankly, deeply woven into the very fabric of the community. He was a proud Irishman, a heritage he celebrated and which was honored when he was named Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1996 – a truly well-deserved distinction. Later, in 2013, he was further recognized as the Irish Father of the Year by the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH). These weren't just titles; they truly reflected the man himself: his warmth, his spirit, and his profound connection to the people around him.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Bernadine Carr, and their cherished children: Michael Carr (married to Bethany), Bridget Maxwell (married to Michael), Timothy Carr (married to Heather), and Monica Noonan (married to Eric). They, along with a vast network of friends, former colleagues, and the community at large, will undoubtedly miss his guiding presence. While he enjoyed spending his winters soaking up the sun in Tucson, Arizona, his heart, you see, always remained firmly here in Michigan.

Friends and loved ones are invited to gather and pay their respects. A Rosary service is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following a period of visitation from 4-7 PM at the Dodds Dumanois Funeral Home and Cremation Center, located at 901 Garland St. in Flint. Additional visitation will take place at Holy Redeemer Church, situated at 1227 East Bristol Rd. in Burton, on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM. This will lead into an 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial, which will be officiated by Father Bob McGraw. It will be a time, I'm sure, to reflect, to grieve, and, most importantly, to celebrate a life truly well-lived and remembered.
