A Horrific Act: Disabled Man Brutally Assaulted by Relatives in Madhya Pradesh

Kanhaiyalal Bairagi, the victim, who lives with a physical disability, was reportedly subjected to a brutal beating. But the torment didn't stop there. What sparked this outrageous display of cruelty? Initial reports suggest the motive stemmed from a contentious dispute over property and money. Apparently, Kanhaiyalal had previously given his daughter a significant portion of land, around 20 bigha. His son-in-law, identified as Pappu Bairagi, was allegedly pressuring him for more—either additional land or cash, purportedly for alcohol. When Kanhaiyalal understandably refused, the situation, tragically, turned violent.

The horrifying events, which reportedly unfolded on a Sunday, didn't remain hidden. A video capturing parts of the assault soon circulated widely, pulling back the curtain on this heinous crime and sparking widespread outrage. And act they did. Responding to the gravity of the situation and the mounting public pressure, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR). They wasted no time in apprehending two individuals implicated in the assault: Pappu Bairagi, the son-in-law, and Anubhav Bairagi, a nephew of the victim. Both have been taken into custody.

The charges against them reflect the severity of their alleged actions. They face various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those for voluntarily causing hurt (323), obscene acts and songs (294), criminal intimidation (506), and acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention (34). Crucially, given the social context, they've also been booked under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
