A Disturbing Web: Ex-KGMU Doctor Faces Charges of Sexual Exploitation and Forced Conversion

In a development that has sent ripples through the medical community and beyond, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has formally filed a chargesheet against a former King George's Medical University (KGMU) resident doctor, Dr. Raheel Khan. The accusations against him are deeply troubling: sexual exploitation of a female colleague, forcing her into religious conversion, and ultimately, abandoning her.

The victim, herself a senior resident doctor at KGMU, recounted a harrowing ordeal to authorities. She alleged that Dr. Khan not only exploited her sexually but also subjected her to forceful conversion to Islam before marrying her. The marriage, however, was allegedly followed by abandonment, leaving her in a distressing situation. This entire episode has, understandably, cast a long shadow, echoing concerns often associated with what is locally termed 'love jihad'.

But the charges against Dr. Khan don't stop there. The investigation, spearheaded by the UP ATS, unearthed further alarming details. It's alleged that he was also involved in running an illegal hospital in Barabanki and practicing medicine without proper registration. Quite frankly, that's a serious breach of professional ethics and legal requirements, adding another layer of misconduct to an already grave situation.

The journey to this chargesheet began with an initial First Information Report (FIR) lodged at Lucknow's Gautampalli police station. Given the sensitive nature and potential wider implications of the case, it was subsequently transferred to the UP ATS for a thorough and specialized investigation. The ATS, in their meticulous probe, discovered what they believe to be a broader network, implicating not just Dr. Raheel, but also his father and other individuals in various illicit activities.

Dr. Khan’s initial attempts to evade arrest, reportedly with assistance from his family, were ultimately unsuccessful. He was apprehended in 2023, bringing a temporary end to his flight from justice. The charges laid out in the chargesheet are extensive and severe, encompassing Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. Moreover, he faces charges under relevant sections of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, underscoring the gravity of the forced conversion allegations.
