A City Mourns: NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller Killed in Line of Duty, Suspects Charged

New York City is reeling from a profound loss, as the community mourns the tragic death of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Monday evening. The 31-year-old officer, a dedicated public servant, husband, and father to a one-year-old son, made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, sending shockwaves through the department and the city at large.

near Mott Avenue and Beach 20th Street. Officer Diller, along with his partner, was conducting a routine traffic stop on an illegally parked 2021 Kia Soul. As the officers approached the vehicle, a passenger, later identified as Guy Rivera, 34, allegedly exited and immediately opened fire. Officer Diller was struck in the stomach, below his bulletproof vest, in a horrifying turn of events that underscored the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement every single day.

In a testament to his bravery and training, Diller’s partner returned fire, striking Rivera in the back.

Both Diller and Rivera were rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where Officer Diller tragically succumbed to his injuries. Rivera is currently in stable condition, recovering under police custody. The driver of the vehicle, Lindy Jones, 41, was also apprehended at the scene. He faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon and illegal possession of a firearm, while Rivera has been charged with murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his deep sorrow, stating, "Our city is hurting. Our police department is hurting. And it’s a pain that I know too well." Jonathan Diller, a resident of Massapequa Park, had been an exemplary member of the NYPD since 2021, serving in the Community Response Team in Far Rockaway's 105th Precinct.

He leaves behind his wife, Stephanie, and their young son, Ryan. The community is now rallying around his family, providing support in the wake of this immeasurable loss.
