Back in what feels like a lifetime ago, York Regional Police launched an investigation into a troubling pattern of thefts. It all kicked off when several homeowners started reporting missing valuables – we're talking about everything from precious jewelry that likely held sentimental value to cold, hard cash and other significant items. The extensive police work eventually led to the apprehension of two suspects. Elena Scurtu, then 50, from Toronto, who was working as a nanny, and Lilia Gaftea, then 35, from Richmond Hill, who was employed as a cleaning woman. It's a particularly disheartening scenario, isn't it, when the people you rely on for domestic support are alleged to be exploiting that very access for illicit gain? They were both charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime, charges that certainly speak to the scale and nature of the alleged wrongdoing.
