Zelensky Accuses Russia of Planning to Deploy 30,000 Additional North Korean Soldiers to the Ukraine Conflict

During a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia is trying to augment its forces in Ukraine with an unprecedented 30,000 extra troops from North Korea. The Ukrainian leader said the figure was based on intelligence shared by Western partners, though he stopped short of revealing the exact source.

"If Moscow thinks it can simply import a foreign army to prop up its offensive, it is gravely mistaken," Zelensky said, his tone a mix of frustration and resolve. "We will not allow any foreign mercenaries, especially those with a history of brutal repression, to dictate the fate of our people."

According to Zelensky, the proposed North Korean contingent would be organized as a distinct unit, trained in Russia before being sent across the frontline. He suggested that such a move would dramatically alter the already volatile balance of forces, potentially extending the conflict and increasing civilian suffering.

The claim has prompted a flurry of reactions. In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the allegation as "pure speculation" and warned that any attempts to smear Russia with unfounded rumors would backfire. Meanwhile, North Korean state media has not commented, maintaining its usual silence on diplomatic matters.

Some in the United States and Europe see Zelensky's warning as a plausible scenario, pointing to Russia's recent recruitment drives among foreign fighters from Africa and the Middle East.
