World Bamboo Day 2026 Shines at Anandaban as Odisha Unveils New Bamboo Haat

On September 18, 2026, the buzzing streets of Anandaban in Kalinga Nagar, Bhubaneswar, turned green – literally. The Odisha Bamboo Development Agency (OBDA) marked World Bamboo Day with a lively ceremony, and the centerpiece was the inauguration of a brand‑new Bamboo Haat.

State Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, who handles Forest, Environment, Climate Change and Labour affairs, arrived as the chief guest. In his brief yet heartfelt address, he reminded everyone that bamboo isn’t just a plant; it’s a fast‑growing, renewable resource that can be turned into everything from sturdy houses and sleek furniture to everyday packaging, tasty food items, and stylish lifestyle accessories. "If we nurture bamboo, we nurture jobs for our villages and a cleaner, circular economy," he said, with a smile that hinted at optimism.

The Haat itself, a modest market space set up under the Odisha Forest Sustainable Development Programme (OFSDP), is meant to be a springboard for local craftsmen, self‑help groups, and budding entrepreneurs. Here they can showcase, promote and sell bamboo wares directly to curious visitors, cutting out middlemen and earning a fairer price.

To give the crowd a glimpse of OBDA’s journey, a short documentary was screened. It stitched together footage of bamboo farms, processing units, training workshops, and success stories of artisans who now earn a livelihood thanks to the green stalk. The film also outlined the agency’s roadmap for the next year – more planting, more processing facilities, and more skill‑building programmes.

But the celebrations didn’t stop at speeches and screens. On September 17‑18, OBDA hosted a Bamboo Product Innovation Competition. Innovators from Odisha, Kerala, Assam and even Delhi arrived with quirky designs: bamboo‑woven shoes, modular furniture, biodegradable cutlery and even a bamboo‑based musical instrument. A panel of judges, including Principal Chief Conservator of Forests K. Murugesan, KONBAC Director Sanjeev Karpe, and OBDA State Mission Director Karthik V., selected the winners, who were later honoured at the main event.

The day wrapped up with lively exchanges among farmers, designers, NGO representatives, researchers and business folks. Everyone seemed to agree on one thing – bamboo, with its rapid growth and versatile uses, could be a cornerstone of Odisha’s sustainable development.
