Virginia Tech Women's Basketball: Unveiling the Thrilling 2026-27 Non-Conference Gauntlet

Hokie Nation, get ready to mark your calendars! The Virginia Tech Women's Basketball team has officially finalized its non-conference schedule for the much-anticipated 2026-27 season. And let me tell you, it's a lineup packed with excitement, challenging opponents, and plenty of opportunities to catch Coach Megan Duffy's squad in action as she enters her third year at the helm. After a solid 23-10 overall record and an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, the Hokies are clearly aiming high, and this schedule reflects that ambition.

Before the regular season even officially tips off, fans will get an early glimpse of the team with an exhibition game against long-time rival Maryland on Monday, October 19, 2026. This is a classic matchup, one that always brings a bit of extra fire, despite the Hokies only having won one of the last nine regular-season contests against the Terps. What a way to warm up!

The real action begins shortly thereafter, as the Hokies open their regular season at home in Cassell Coliseum on Monday, November 2, 2026, against NC Central. That’s just the start of a busy month in Blacksburg, with Delaware (November 4) and James Madison (November 8) also visiting early on. The JMU game, in particular, will be one to watch; Virginia Tech suffered a 65-56 loss to them last year, and this marks JMU's first trip to Cassell since way back in December 2008. Talk about a chance for some sweet redemption on home court!

Interestingly, the Hokies will only have one true road game during their non-conference stretch. That lone away contest sees them heading to Richmond on November 12 to face VCU at the Siegel Center. It’s their first trip to VCU since a tough 72-58 defeat back in 2009, so this will be a good early test of their mettle on hostile ground. Aside from that, Blacksburg faithful are in for a treat with a whopping 10 home games set for Cassell Coliseum, making it easy to support the team.

As November rolls on, La Salle comes to town on the 15th, a team that actually made it to the second round of the WNIT last season. Then, it's off to sunny Destin, Florida, for the Emerald Coast Classic. Virginia Tech will face UT Martin on November 23 in their first-ever meeting, followed by a fascinating matchup against either Michigan State or Alcorn State on November 24. That Michigan State game, if it happens, could be particularly intriguing, especially considering the Hokies have a 3-1 all-time record against them, though their last meeting was nearly a decade ago.

December brings more exciting challenges. UNC Greensboro visits on the 29th of November, but the real highlight of early December has to be the highly anticipated SEC/ACC Challenge. The Hokies will host Tennessee on December 3 – a game that carries extra weight, especially since Virginia Tech emerged victorious with a 73-64 win against the Lady Vols in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, a win that propelled them to their program’s only Final Four bid! And, you know, it’s also worth noting that two of the Hokies' exciting new additions, guard-forward Lauren Hurst and forward Alyssa Latham, both hail from Tennessee. Talk about a compelling narrative!

Rounding out the non-conference slate, the Hokies welcome Appalachian State (December 9), Campbell (December 13), Radford (December 21), and College of Charleston (December 28) to Cassell Coliseum. Campbell, a team Virginia Tech defeated handily last season, and Radford, who made it to the WNIT second round, present good challenges. College of Charleston, boasting a 27-6 record and a CAA championship last year, will be another solid test as the Hokies gear up for the rigorous ACC schedule.
