Tragedy Strikes Charlottesville: Albemarle Man Charged in Fatal Shooting

A wave of shock and sorrow has once again rippled through the Charlottesville community following a fatal shooting early Monday morning that claimed the life of a 41-year-old man. The incident, which occurred in the 1300 block of Carlton Avenue, marks the city's second homicide of 2024, prompting renewed concerns about public safety and the welfare of its residents.

Charlottesville Police Department officers responded to urgent reports of a shooting at approximately 12:47 a.m.

on May 20, 2024. Upon their swift arrival, they discovered Anthony Michael Johnson, 41, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Despite immediate efforts from emergency personnel, Johnson tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene, leaving behind a community in mourning.

In the wake of this devastating event, the Charlottesville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division launched an intensive and rapid investigation.

Their diligent and tireless efforts swiftly led to the identification of a suspect: 31-year-old Brian Eric Marshall, an Albemarle County resident.

Facing grave charges that reflect the severity of the alleged crime, Marshall, understanding the seriousness of the situation, voluntarily turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

He has since been formally charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Marshall is currently being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings as the judicial process begins.
