Tractor Tragedy Strikes Ganesh Immersion Parade in Dharmavaram

What should have been a joyous Ganesh immersion ceremony turned into a nightmare on the night of September 18, 2026, when a tractor careened into a throng of worshippers in Dharmavaram, Sri Sathya Sai district.

According to police, the driver — later taken into custody — lost control of the vehicle on a cramped stretch of road near Sivanagar Bramhamgari Temple. In a split second the tractor ripped through the gathering, striking a nine‑year‑old girl identified as Varshita, who later succumbed to her injuries.

Besides the heartbreaking loss of Varshita, seven others were left seriously hurt. They were rushed to the Government Hospital in Dharmavaram, where medical staff worked frantically to stabilise them.

Police officials confirmed that the tractor has been seized and a formal case registered. “We are investigating the exact cause of the mishap and will take appropriate legal action,” a senior officer said while taking statements from the victims.

Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, on learning of the tragedy, instructed the health department to provide “the best possible medical care” to those injured. The minister’s local representative, Harish Babu, arrived at the hospital, spoke with doctors and met the grieving family of the young girl.

In a phone conversation with the family, Minister Yadav expressed his shock and promised that the government would shoulder all medical expenses for the victims. “We stand with you in this painful time,” he told them.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter crowd‑control measures during religious processions, especially when vehicles are used for logistical support. Residents of Dharmavaram voiced their grief and urged authorities to ensure such a calamity never repeats.

As the community mourns, local officials are reviewing safety protocols, hoping to prevent another heartbreaking episode during future festivals.
