Rabies scare in Kootenay Lake: Multiple people receive post‑exposure treatment after skunk test‑positive

Interior Health issued a stark warning on Saturday after a skunk discovered in the Kootenay Lake region tested positive for rabies. The animal is believed to have been infectious from Aug. 15 through Sept. 4, a window during which several people came into contact with it.

Those who were scratched or bitten by the skunk have already received post‑exposure prophylaxis – the series of vaccines that can stop the virus before it takes hold. The health authority is urging anyone who thinks they might have been exposed, even briefly, to head straight to the nearest emergency department for evaluation.

Rabies, while exceedingly rare in British Columbia and across Canada, remains almost invariably fatal once symptoms appear. The good news is that prompt vaccination is highly effective. It’s important to note that the virus does not spread through a skunk’s spray, urine, or feces – it’s transmitted only through the saliva that enters a wound.

Pets and other animals that could have tangled with the skunk should be taken to a veterinarian without delay. Vets can administer the appropriate rabies vaccine and, if needed, submit samples for testing.

Officials stress that human cases of rabies are extremely uncommon, but when they do occur they are serious business. “Infections are usually fatal, but preventable when vaccines are administered promptly after an exposure,” Interior Health said in its release.

Residents are being reminded to keep a safe distance from wildlife, especially if an animal appears sick or behaves unusually. And, as always, report any suspicious encounters to local health authorities right away.
