Premier Doug Ford used a news conference in Guelph to outline a set of rules that, he says, will keep the province’s grid stable while making sure local communities reap real benefits.

At the heart of the plan is a new electricity tariff. Any new data‑centre that draws more than one megawatt – a threshold low enough to capture virtually every AI‑focused facility – will be charged a higher rate than other heavy‑industry users. The idea is simple: if you’re going to gulp huge amounts of power, you should pay a premium for it, rather than leaving the cost to rate‑payers.

But the government isn’t stopping at price signals. Developers will be encouraged – and in some cases required – to build their own power‑generation assets instead of leaning on the province’s grid. Environmental groups, too, see a silver lining. David Pickup of the Pembina Institute praised the emphasis on closed‑loop cooling and waste‑heat recovery, but warned that the real test will be whether Ontario can keep electricity rates stable and emissions in check as demand spikes.

Politically, the plan has drawn criticism from opposition figures. Liberal energy critic Ted Hsu warned that a consultation that simply checks boxes won’t be enough; Ontarians will want proof that the province can guarantee rate‑payer protection and genuine community benefits.
