A storm of political speculation is brewing in Jammu and Kashmir, fueled by a startling pronouncement from veteran leader Omar Abdullah. The National Conference vice-president has drawn a direct, unsettling link between the BJP's recent electoral setbacks in assembly elections across four states and the persistent delay in restoring statehood to the Union Territory.

Abdullah's claim is more than just political commentary; it's a stark warning that could profoundly shape the region's future.

According to Abdullah, the BJP, bruised by its performance in the recent polls, is now hesitant to face another electoral challenge in J&K. "The reason J&K may not get statehood anytime soon is because the BJP lost the four assembly elections," Abdullah asserted, suggesting a calculated political maneuver.

The promise then was a swift return to statehood, a promise that, in Abdullah's view, now appears increasingly hollow.

Abdullah’s skepticism isn't unfounded.

He reminded the public of past assurances from the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, who had repeatedly pledged that statehood would be restored swiftly once the situation normalized. "If the situation is normal enough to hold elections, it is normal enough to restore statehood," he argued, highlighting the glaring inconsistency between the government's rhetoric and its actions.

The National Conference, despite its reservations about the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent delimitation exercise that redrew electoral boundaries, has indicated its willingness to participate in the upcoming elections.
