Old Comments Reignite Firestorm: Talarico's Stance on Parental Rights Rocks Texas Senate Race

Well, here we are again, seeing old remarks bubble up to the surface just as a political race really heats up. This time, it's Texas Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful James Talarico finding himself squarely in the spotlight, thanks to a resurfaced video from 2019. In it, he makes some pretty eyebrow-raising comments about parental behavior regarding a child's gender identity, and believe me, it’s stirring quite the hornet’s nest in the Lone Star State.

The clip, which dates back to Talarico’s tenure as a state lawmaker, captures him during a committee hearing in the Texas Legislature. The topic at hand was House Bill 1910, a piece of legislation designed to protect parents from being accused of child abuse simply for not affirming their child's self-identified gender in custody disputes. But Talarico, speaking on the matter, clearly had a very different perspective. He asserted that parents who, in his words, 'deny their child's gender identity' are engaging in behavior that is 'abusive for sure.' Quite a strong statement, wouldn't you say?

He didn’t stop there, either. Talarico vehemently opposed HB 1910, arguing passionately that to simply rule out the possibility of such behavior being deemed abusive was, frankly, 'dangerous.' He went on to suggest that it could 'certainly harm some of our most vulnerable kids in the state,' painting a picture of potential neglect or mistreatment. And just to be clear, his opposition wasn't a one-off thing; he later voted against an even 'stronger version' of the bill that eventually became law in May 2025, casting one of a mere 59 nay votes. It seems he truly believed in his stance, even proposing amendments that would, for instance, sunset the law in 2030 or explicitly state that 'rejecting a child's gender identity or sexual orientation is abuse' under Texas law. Talk about unwavering conviction.

Unsurprisingly, this unearthed footage has given Republicans, who are absolutely vying for every advantage in this critical Senate race, plenty of ammunition. Zach Kraft, the spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, didn’t mince words when he slammed Talarico. 'Only perverts and pedophiles think about what is in little kids' pants as much as James Talafreako,' Kraft asserted in a fiery statement, before adding, 'He is a truly sick individual for dedicating his life to pushing sex changes on other people's kids.' It’s a harsh, even incendiary, accusation, certainly designed to hit hard in a political climate where these issues are so deeply polarizing.

On the flip side, the Talarico campaign, through spokesperson JT Ennis, quickly moved to defend their candidate and, quite naturally, to shift the narrative. Ennis stated quite clearly that James, for his part, believes parents should have the ultimate say in decisions concerning their children. In fact, Ennis pointed out that Talarico even sponsored a bill aimed at protecting parental rights, and has consistently 'fought for Texas parents and families.' And then, in a classic political maneuver, Ennis turned the attack back on Talarico's opponent, Ken Paxton, alleging that the current Attorney General 'has endangered them by allowing pedophiles back on our streets.' So, the gloves are definitely off in this contest.

With the general election date set for November 3, 2026, and Talarico hitting the campaign trail hard – making stops everywhere from Georgetown to Round Rock and Kerrville throughout January, March, and August of 2026 – these comments are sure to follow him. This controversy just adds another layer to what was already shaping up to be a truly contentious battle for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas. It's a vivid reminder that in politics, especially in such high-stakes races, what you said years ago can absolutely resurface, sometimes with an entirely new and impactful context.
