A disturbing report has cast a shadow over women's safety in Odisha, revealing a staggering 37,611 crimes against women recorded in just 14 months. These alarming statistics were brought to light by leaders of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), who presented the data as a direct rebuttal to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) claims regarding the state's law and order situation.

The BJD's counter-attack, spearheaded by figures like Sasmit Patra and Sulata Deo, highlighted the grim reality faced by women in Odisha.

They meticulously detailed how, from January 2023 to February 2024, the state witnessed a relentless onslaught of criminal activities targeting its female population. This period, coinciding with the BJP's increasing political presence and scrutiny of the incumbent government, now puts the spotlight firmly back on the opposition regarding their own performance in states they govern or influence.

The catalogue of offenses is deeply troubling: 2,756 cases of rape, including 38 incidents of murder with rape; 5,098 cases of kidnapping; 4,379 instances of dowry harassment; 3,514 cases of assault with intent to outrage modesty; and a horrifying 14,082 cases of cruelty by husband or his relatives.

Additionally, the data points to 226 cases of human trafficking, underscoring the multifaceted dangers women face across the state.
