Odisha's Heart Aches for Nepal: Naveen Patnaik Voices Grief and Concern for Missing Tourists

The news from Nepal, a nation often close to India's heart, has truly been heartbreaking recently. In the wake of devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across the Himalayan nation, particularly along the furious Bhote Koshi river, Odisha's former Chief Minister and current Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president, Naveen Patnaik, has voiced profound grief over the tragic loss of life. More pressingly, he’s expressed deep concern for the numerous Indians still unaccounted for, as the waters begin to recede, leaving a trail of destruction and unanswered questions.

Hailing from the Khordha district, this young couple had been living in Australia since 2018, and like so many, had chosen Nepal for a much-anticipated vacation, arriving on August 22. Their disappearance amidst the chaos has sent ripples of anxiety through their family and the entire Odia community, prompting Mr. Patnaik to personally extend his sympathies and fervent hopes for their safe return. He articulated his sorrow from Bhubaneswar on Thursday, emphasizing the collective grief felt by the people of Odisha.

Adding to the widespread anxiety, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that approximately 290 Indian nationals are still out of contact following the catastrophic floods. This grim figure underscores the sheer scale of the disaster and the monumental challenge faced by rescue and recovery teams. While the immediate focus is on locating these missing individuals, the broader picture involves identifying those tragically lost and assisting the countless others affected by nature's fury.

Meanwhile, back home in Odisha, Suryabanshi Suraj, the state’s Youth and Sports Services and Odia Language, Literature & Culture Minister, also weighed in, sharing the collective concern for the missing Odia couple. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the exact number of Odia tourists affected, noting that a comprehensive count might take another day or two to compile.
