Sunday night turned chaotic at Manhattan’s COS Spring 2027 runway when two PETA activists stormed the catwalk, brandishing handmade signs and chanting for a wool ban. The audience, which included actress Michelle Williams and a host of other A‑list faces, watched the disturbance unfold in stunned silence.

Steven Kolb, the chief executive of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the de‑facto boss of New York Fashion Week, didn’t wait for security to step in. In a moment that quickly went viral, Kolb snatched one of the placards and forced the protester, Mason Melito, into a corner, covering his mouth to mute the chant.

Kolb’s actions didn’t stop there. He then turned his attention to a second demonstrator – a young woman shouting, “Protect the sheep!” He pulled her to the ground, wrapped a leg around her waist and held her wrists, effectively silencing her until staff escorted her out. The footage shows Kolb’s hand hovering over her mouth, a stark contrast to the polished glamour of the runway.

After the brief scuffle, the woman managed to rise, staggered back onto the catwalk and, still breathless, shouted, “Please take the sheep off the runway!” The show, however, carried on as scheduled, the lights dimming and models resuming their walk.

Both activists later filed reports at a nearby police precinct, saying they might pursue legal action against the CFDA. Melito described his colleague’s experience as feeling “suffocated,” noting that she sought urgent care after the incident. He added, “The violence shown to PETA supporters is nothing compared to what the sheep endure.”

Neither H&M nor a CFDA spokesperson responded to requests for comment, and Kolb was not taken into custody. The incident reignites the ongoing debate over animal‑derived materials in fashion, especially after allegations that COS, an upscale H&M brand, sourced wool from farms accused of mistreating sheep.
