The political landscape of New Jersey is already buzzing with anticipation for the 2025 gubernatorial election, and a recent poll has just dropped a bombshell, indicating a potential nail-biter. Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a familiar face from the 2021 race, appears to be holding a razor-thin lead over Democratic U.S.

Representative Mikie Sherrill, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle for the Garden State's highest office.

According to a new FDU Poll released on Thursday, Ciattarelli currently enjoys 35 percent support among likely voters, just nudging ahead of Sherrill, who garnered 34 percent.

With a critical margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points, these numbers effectively place the two formidable candidates in a statistical dead heat. This early snapshot underscores the intense competition brewing, even as the election remains over a year away.

Ciattarelli is no stranger to the gubernatorial arena, having mounted a strong challenge against incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in 2021, ultimately losing by a narrow three-point margin.

His name recognition and established base among Republican voters are clearly playing a significant role in these early projections. On the Democratic side, Mikie Sherrill, a respected U.S. Representative, is widely considered a leading contender for the party's nomination, bringing her own brand of political prowess to the potential contest.

The poll also factored in other prominent figures who could shake up the race.

Former Democratic state Senate President Stephen Sweeney registered 7 percent support, while Republican state Senator Edward Durr, known for his upset victory over Sweeney in 2021, secured 6 percent. It's worth noting that current Governor Phil Murphy, who is term-limited, maintains a respectable 49 percent approval rating against 38 percent disapproval, suggesting a generally favorable environment for Democrats, though his personal popularity doesn't necessarily translate to an easy victory for his party's future nominee.

"This is a wide-open race, but Ciattarelli's name recognition from the previous gubernatorial campaign is clearly giving him an advantage," commented Dan Cassino, the Executive Director of the FDU Poll.

He further highlighted Sherrill's strong appeal among her party's base. "Sherrill's numbers among Democrats show how quickly she'd be able to catch up once she can get her message out," Cassino added, pointing to the dynamic nature of early polling.

A deeper dive into the numbers reveals Ciattarelli's solid base, with 68 percent of Republicans throwing their support behind him.

Sherrill, meanwhile, commands a strong 60 percent of the Democratic vote. Crucially, the independent voters, often the kingmakers in close elections, are currently split: Ciattarelli holds 31 percent to Sherrill's 27 percent. A significant 27 percent of these independents, however, remain undecided, representing a key demographic that both campaigns will undoubtedly court aggressively.

The presence of Sweeney and Durr also draws support away from the leading contenders within their respective parties, adding another layer of complexity to the race.
