New Jersey Breathes Sigh of Relief as Weekend Flood Threat Recedes

Well, what a weekend it's been for New Jersey, eh? After days of looking nervously at the sky, clutching umbrellas a little tighter, it seems we can finally breathe a collective sigh of relief. Those rather persistent showers and storms that kept us on edge are thankfully drawing to a close this Sunday morning, and more importantly, the National Weather Service's flood watches across the state are set to expire by 10:00 AM. It’s a welcome sign, really.

For a good chunk of the weekend, forecasters were warning us about some truly intense rainfall. We're talking about downpours that could hit rates of nearly two inches per hour during the stronger storm cells. And that, my friends, is exactly the kind of deluge that triggers those all-important flood warnings. No one wants to deal with flash flooding, especially on a weekend, right?

The National Weather Service, our reliable source for these things, had quite a few eyes on the Garden State. Many of our counties, from the bustling north to the more tranquil south, found themselves under a flood watch. Think of Bergen, Union, Hudson, and Essex up north, stretching down through Passaic, Morris, and even Mercer and Middlesex in the central part of the state. And let's not forget our friends in Monmouth, Ocean, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Salem, Somerset, and Burlington – you were all on alert too. It was a widespread concern, to say the least.

Interestingly, particular attention was paid to parts of Southern New Jersey, especially those areas hugging the Delaware River. There was a slightly elevated, or "slight risk," as the NWS put it, for excessive rainfall potentially leading to flash flooding there. You know, just when you thought you might enjoy a riverside view, Mother Nature decides to remind you who's boss.

So, what did Sunday bring as the weekend wound down? Well, for North and Central Jersey, the morning continued with an 80% chance of rain, thankfully expected to taper off. Temperatures were looking like a high near 70 degrees, dipping to a comfortable low around 57 overnight, with a gentle west wind around 5 to 10 mph. Not too bad, considering what we'd just been through. New rainfall amounts for the day were anticipated to be between a quarter and half an inch, nothing compared to the earlier deluge.

Down in South Jersey, the story was pretty much the same. An 80% chance of showers early Sunday, gradually easing off. Highs were expected to hover around 71 degrees, with overnight lows dipping to about 59. The winds there were also a mild west at 5 to 10 mph. So, while we certainly had a soggy start to our Sunday, it seems the worst of the weather decided to pack its bags and move on. Here's hoping for some clearer skies and drier days ahead!
