Middleton Breathes Sigh of Relief: Man Charged in String of Daring Robberies

For a small, close-knit community like Middleton, Nova Scotia, a string of armed robberies can really send ripples of unease through the streets. And that's precisely what happened over a tense couple of days this past week, leaving folks understandably on edge. Thankfully, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police acted quickly, bringing a measure of calm back to the Annapolis Valley town.

It all began on Sunday, June 2nd, with a brazen incident at a convenience store right on Main Street. Imagine the scene: a masked individual, brandishing a knife, demanding cash. It's the kind of unsettling event that no one expects in their hometown. The suspect, after grabbing an undisclosed amount of money, managed to flee the scene, leaving behind a shaken staff member and a worried community.

But the trouble didn't stop there. Just a day later, on Monday, June 3rd, the same disturbing pattern repeated itself, not once, but twice. First, a gas station, also located on Main Street, was targeted in a very similar fashion – another masked person, another knife, another demand for cash, and another quick escape. Later that very same day, a local liquor store found itself in the crosshairs, completing a trio of frightening armed holdups in less than 48 hours.

The situation clearly demanded a swift and decisive response, and the RCMP delivered. Officers from the Annapolis District, alongside members of the RCMP Police Dog Service, immediately launched a full-scale investigation. Their hard work paid off remarkably fast. By Tuesday, June 4th, police had identified and arrested a suspect, a 30-year-old man named Jordan Michael Hatt, bringing an end to the unsettling crime spree.

Hatt has since been charged with a laundry list of serious offences, reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed. These include three counts of robbery, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and three counts of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence. Furthermore, he faces three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering threats. It’s a stark reminder of the potential danger involved in such incidents.

After appearing in Annapolis Royal Provincial Court on Tuesday, Jordan Michael Hatt was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court on July 2nd. For now, it seems Middleton can breathe a collective sigh of relief, knowing that the individual believed responsible for these unsettling events is no longer a threat to their community's peace of mind.
