Majha's Renewed Agony: As Ravi and Beas Rivers Surge Anew, Floods Engulf the Region

The tranquil landscape of Punjab’s Majha region has once again been shattered by the relentless fury of nature, as the mighty Ravi and Beas rivers, swollen by persistent rains, have surged to alarming levels. This renewed rise in water marks a critical turn, intensifying an already grim flood situation and plunging communities into a deepening crisis.

Reports from the ground paint a stark picture: Gurdaspur and Pathankot districts are bearing the brunt of the escalating floods.

Villages nestled along the riverbanks, which had barely begun to recover from previous inundations, are now facing the devastating prospect of being submerged once more. The Beas river, fed by significant inflows from its catchment areas, and the Ravi, impacted by releases and heavy rains, are pushing their boundaries, turning fertile lands into vast, murky lakes.

The human toll is immense.

Thousands of residents, many of whom had only recently returned to their homes, are now confronted with the harrowing decision to evacuate again. Relief camps are being reactivated, offering a temporary refuge for those displaced, but the emotional and physical strain on these communities is palpable.

Rescue operations are underway, navigating treacherous waters to reach marooned villages and evacuate stranded individuals. Warnings have been issued to residents in low-lying areas, urging them to move to higher ground, while continuous monitoring of water levels remains a top priority.

The worsening flood situation is a stark reminder of nature’s power and the vulnerability of human settlements.

As the Majha region braces for further challenges, the resilience of its people is being tested once more.
