Lily Gladstone Makes History With ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Performance Win At The Golden Globes In The Best Actress In A Motion Picture Drama

The Golden Globes kicked off the 2024 awards season with a bang, honoring the best in film and television. One of the most anticipated categories was Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama, which featured several powerhouse performances over the past year. In the end, the Golden Globes awarded the honor to Lily Gladstone makes history as the first Indigenous woman to receive the award in the show’s 81 year history for her transformative portrayal in Martin Scorsese drama Killers of the Flower Moon .
The film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann. The film depicts the serial murder of members of the oil wealthy Osage Nation in Oklahoma during the 1920s, after they made massive discoveries of oil on their land. Gladstone, an actress known for indie films like Certain Women and Billions, plays the role of Mollie Burkhart.
Mollie is an Osage woman who marries Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of a powerful local rancher. After Mollie’s family members start turning up dead, she becomes caught up in the investigation into the murders. “I’m here with my mom, who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom, so I had a Blackfeet language teacher growing up.” She adds a historic tidbit about how native languages were often portrayed in Hollywood. “I’m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language– which I’m not fluent in up here.
In this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish native languages on camera.” The actress thanks Leonardo DiCaprio and Scorsese for “changing things and being such allies,” and also thanks Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear and the Osage Nation.
She also acknowledges this win is something more than just a trophy. “This is an historic one and it doesn’t belong to just me. I’m holding it right now and holding it with all my beautiful sisters in the film.” Gladston has been building up buzz and acclaim over award season with a string of wins from critics groups but Killers of the Flower Moon , marks her first major leading role in a prestigious drama.
She’s been vocal about the ups and downs of being an actress in the industry, but the end of her speech inspires hope that all things are possible to achieve. “This is for every little res kid, every little urban kid, every little native kid out there who has a dream to see themselves represented, and our stories told by ourselves in our own words.
