Kerala On High Alert: Battling the Raging North-East Monsoon's Fury

Kerala is bracing itself for a formidable challenge as the North-East Monsoon intensifies its grip, unleashing a potent mix of heavy rainfall and strong winds across the state. Authorities have sounded high alerts, urging residents to prepare for potential flooding, landslides, and sea erosion, as a period of intense weather activity looms large over the coming days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued grave warnings, placing several districts under a watchful eye.

Red alerts, signifying the highest level of preparedness, have been declared for Kottayam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta for October 22, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall—between 7 and 20 centimetres—within a 24-hour period. Furthermore, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts are under an Orange alert, signalling a need for heightened vigilance and pre-emptive action.

The coastal belt is expected to bear the brunt of robust winds, forecasted to gust between 40 to 55 kilometres per hour, creating extremely rough sea conditions.

Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the Arabian Sea until further notice, as high waves and strong currents pose significant hazards to maritime activities. Coastal communities, already vulnerable, are urged to prepare for intensified sea erosion that could threaten homes and infrastructure.

Beyond the coast, low-lying areas are on high alert for flash floods, which can develop rapidly and with little warning, posing a direct threat to life and property.

Meanwhile, the picturesque yet fragile hilly regions are facing an increased risk of landslides and mudslides. Residents in these areas, particularly those in disaster-prone zones, are advised to exercise extreme caution and be ready for immediate relocation if circumstances demand, prioritizing safety above all.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a comprehensive advisory, emphasizing public safety and proactive measures.

Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially into regions under high alert. Securing household articles, ensuring the safety of domestic animals, and preparing emergency kits are crucial steps. The SDMA also stresses the importance of staying updated with official weather forecasts and advisories from reliable sources, and to report any unusual occurrences to local authorities immediately.

Special vigilance against lightning strikes is also advised during this period.

This period of intense weather is expected to persist, with the IMD forecasting continued heavy rainfall until at least October 24.
