Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil Under Police Scanner for Stalking and Criminal Intimidation Allegations

A significant political storm is brewing in Kerala as Rahul Mamkootathil, the prominent Youth Congress state vice-president and MLA representing Adoor, finds himself under intense police scrutiny. An First Information Report (FIR) has been officially registered against him, implicating him in grave charges of stalking and criminal intimidation.

The allegations stem from a complaint filed by a woman hailing from Kollam. According to the police, the FIR has been lodged under serious sections of the Indian Penal Code: 354D, which pertains to stalking, and 506, addressing criminal intimidation.

The complainant's detailed account reveals a concerning timeline of events. She claims that she first encountered Mamkootathil in 2021 through a mutual acquaintance. Initially, their interactions involved the exchange of messages.

However, the situation allegedly escalated when the MLA began sending her unsolicited messages. While she admits to having initially reciprocated, she subsequently decided to distance herself from him. It was at this point, she alleges, that the nature of his communication turned threatening, causing her immense mental distress and impacting her daily life.

The woman initially lodged a complaint with the police way back in April. However, she asserts that despite her plea, no immediate action was taken. Frustrated by the perceived inaction, she then escalated the matter by dispatching a lawyer's notice to the police, compelling them to finally register the FIR.

This delay has also drawn attention to the handling of such sensitive complaints.

In response to these serious accusations, Rahul Mamkootathil has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He has publicly stated that the entire episode is a calculated and politically motivated conspiracy orchestrated by his adversaries.

According to the MLA, this is a clear attempt to tarnish his reputation and sabotage his nascent political career. He also brought up an earlier complaint he had filed against the woman, alleging blackmail, although that complaint was reportedly dropped.

The Indian National Congress, Mamkootathil's party, has adopted a cautious stance on the matter.

John Varghese, the general secretary of the Congress, has indicated that while the party will not intervene in the ongoing investigation at this preliminary stage, it will not hesitate to take appropriate action should the allegations against Mamkootathil be substantiated through due process.
