JNU Students' Uprising: 28 Detained After Intense Clash with Police During Parliament March

A major confrontation erupted in the heart of Delhi on Wednesday as students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) clashed with police during a protest march aimed at India's Parliament. The demonstration, driven by deep-seated grievances over campus policies and financial support, saw at least 28 students detained amidst a tense standoff.

The protest, organised by the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU), began on the university campus with a clear objective: to voice strong opposition to what they described as "anti-student policies of the government." Key demands included the immediate disbursement of long-pending scholarships, the revocation of a controversial new hostel manual, and a rollback of recent fee hikes, which students argue place an undue burden on their academic pursuits.

As the students attempted to march from their campus towards the Parliament building, they were met by a substantial contingent of Delhi Police personnel near Bhikaji Cama Place.

With over 200 officers deployed, the police erected barricades to prevent the protesters from advancing further into the city's sensitive areas. Eyewitnesses reported a volatile scene as students, determined to make their voices heard, began pushing against the barricades, attempting to break through the police cordon.

The situation quickly escalated into a direct confrontation.

While the police stated they used "mild force" to disperse the agitated crowd, the clash resulted in a number of students being apprehended. In total, 28 students were reportedly detained and subsequently transported to various police stations across the city, sparking further outrage among their peers and student activist groups.

The JNUSU has consistently accused the university administration of failing to address their concerns, leading to a breakdown in communication and a growing sense of frustration among the student body.
