Jennifer Finch, L7's Iconic Bassist and Fearless Artist, Passes Away at 59

It's with a heavy heart that we share the news of Jennifer Finch's passing. The incredibly talented and truly iconic bassist, singer, and songwriter for the pioneering indie-rock band L7, left us on Saturday, July 18th, at the age of 59. She had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer, a diagnosis that, devastatingly, only became public in early July, just days before her death.

Jennifer wasn't just a musician; she was, to put it simply, a force of nature. Born in Los Angeles in 1966, she grew up immersed in the vibrant West L.A. scene, finding her voice and vision early on. Before she even picked up a bass professionally, she was capturing the raw energy of the L.A. punk scene through her photography, with some of her striking work even gracing the walls of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That tells you something about her eye, her spirit, and her deep connection to the underground.

Her musical journey officially began in 1984, and what a journey it was. She spent time in notable early bands like Sugar Baby Doll, alongside future alt-rock luminaries Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland, and even had a brief stint with The Pandoras. But it was in 1986, when she joined L7, that her star truly began to ascend. Co-founding the band, Jennifer's fierce basslines and undeniable stage presence helped define L7's signature sound – a potent blend of grunge, punk, and hard rock that ripped through the music scene of the late 80s and 90s.

She was instrumental in co-writing some of L7's most memorable tracks, songs like “(Right On) Thru,” “Everglade,” and the unforgettable “Shirley.” Her influence was palpable, her contributions invaluable. While she stepped away from L7 in 1996, her heart ultimately led her back to the band in 2014, much to the delight of their devoted fanbase. They even released a new album, "Scatter the Rats," in 2019 via Joan Jett's Blackheart Records, proving their enduring power.

Beyond L7, Jennifer's creative spirit never rested. She performed with other bands, including OtherStarPeople, who released an album in 1999, and The Shocker. She also founded Little Pusher Records, even producing a Ramones tribute album to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital – a testament to her giving nature. This past year, however, saw her unable to join L7 on their "Last Hurrah Tour" due to her worsening illness. In a beautiful outpouring of solidarity, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support her medical and rehabilitation expenses, quickly raising nearly $400,000, showcasing just how much she meant to so many.

Jennifer Finch leaves behind an incredible legacy: a trailblazing musician, a keen-eyed artist, and a vital voice in a generation of rock. Her passion, her grit, and her unwavering dedication to her craft will continue to inspire.
