ISKCON Juhu Kitchen Licence Revoked Over Hygiene Violations

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) swung by the Prabhu Radha Krishna ISKSTR temple in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood last week, part of a broader sweep of high‑profile eateries.

Inspectors zeroed in on the kitchen that powers the temple’s popular Govinda Restaurant. What they found, according to the agency’s report, was a string of hygiene breaches – from greasy buildup on surfaces to inadequate storage of perishable items.

“The conditions observed do not meet the basic standards required for safe food preparation,” an FDA spokesperson said in a brief statement. The agency issued an immediate notice and, after a short deliberation, cancelled the kitchen’s operating licence.

ISKCON has publicly acknowledged the findings. In a statement released shortly after the raid, the temple said it is fully cooperating with the authorities and will keep the kitchen shut until every shortfall is rectified and the required standards are reinstated.

Temple devotees have expressed mixed reactions. While some are disappointed, many appreciate the transparency and the promise of a safer dining experience once the kitchen reopens.

Meanwhile, the FDA has hinted that other religious and community kitchens in the city may also be subject to similar checks in the coming weeks, underscoring a city‑wide push for better food‑safety compliance.
