Startling new data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) reveals a grim reality: an average of 16 lives are lost every single day due to hazardous road conditions, specifically potholes and poorly managed under-construction zones.

This translates to an alarming 5,840 preventable deaths annually from just these two factors, painting a stark picture of a nationwide infrastructure crisis.

The MoRTH report for 2022 meticulously documents the scale of this tragedy. While the broader category of road defects and other hazards claimed a staggering 14,334 lives throughout the year, potholes alone were responsible for 3,624 fatalities across the country.

That's an average of nearly 10 deaths per day directly attributable to cratered surfaces, with Uttar Pradesh bearing a particularly heavy burden, accounting for 1,069 of these pothole-related deaths – roughly three lives lost every day in the state due to these avoidable road hazards.

Even more concerning is the toll taken by under-construction roads.

These sites, meant to improve infrastructure, paradoxically became death traps, claiming 2,684 lives in 2022. This averages out to approximately 11 fatalities daily across India in these active work zones. Uttar Pradesh once again features prominently in these statistics, recording 728 deaths linked to under-construction roads, highlighting significant safety oversight and management failures in these vital projects.

Beyond potholes and construction sites, other road hazards also contribute to the devastating count.

Illegally constructed speed breakers, often poorly designed and unlit, were implicated in a shocking 8,679 deaths in 2022, underscoring another critical area where safety standards are severely lacking. The cumulative data points to a systemic failure in ensuring road safety, from planning and construction to maintenance and regulatory enforcement.

The geographic spread of these tragedies further emphasizes the pervasive nature of the problem.

While Uttar Pradesh leads in pothole-related deaths, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra also reported significant numbers. For fatalities on under-construction roads, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka followed UP in the unfortunate rankings.
