IMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across India Until Sept 15

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm for a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms that will roll across much of the country between September 9 and September 15.

In the north‑west, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh can expect isolated showers, while Himachal Pradesh may see rain spread from scattered to fairly widespread by the middle of the week. Uttarakhand is slated for scattered rain early on, turning into a fairly widespread downpour from the 11th onward, with thunderstorms possible through the 14th.

Moving east, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and western Uttar Pradesh will get intermittent rain, but heavy showers could burst on the 14th and 15th. Central regions such as Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha will experience a shift from isolated showers to widespread rain, with heavy bursts especially on September 12‑14.

Further south, the Konkan coast, Goa and coastal Maharashtra are set for fairly widespread rain throughout the period, with heavy downpours likely on the 13th‑14th. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Telangana will also see periods of scattered to widespread rain, punctuated by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In the east and northeast, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and the Himalayan states will experience fairly widespread to extremely heavy rain, with lightning activity especially strong in Assam and Meghalaya on September 9.

Fishermen have been specifically advised to exercise caution in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea as rough conditions are expected.

Overall, the monsoon trough has shifted north of its usual position in the west while remaining near normal in the east, setting the stage for the varied but intense rainfall pattern across the nation.
