IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert Across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Till July 27

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) rolled out a fresh bullet‑in on Wednesday evening, flagging a week of wet weather that will blanket Andhra Pradesh, the Union Territory of Yanam and Telangana until the 27th of July. While the overall picture is of light to moderate rain, several pockets are bracing for heavier downpours, thunderstorms and gusty breezes.

According to the Amaravati Meteorological Centre’s 8 pm update and the Hyderabad‑Begumpet Centre’s 5:30 pm bulletin, the most vulnerable districts could see rain intensify to between 64 mm and 115 mm in a 24‑hour spell – that’s what IMD classifies as ‘heavy’ rainfall. Alongside, lightning strikes and wind gusts of 30‑50 km/h are expected to pepper the landscape.

In Andhra Pradesh, the alert points to scattered showers from July 21 to 25, with isolated thunderstorms and gusts of about 40‑50 km/h on the 21st and 22nd. The winds are likely to ease a touch, hovering around 30‑40 km/h on the 23rd and 24th, before the rain eases again towards the weekend.

Telangana’s outlook is similar, though the department highlighted specific districts that could feel the brunt of the deluge – Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy. These areas may encounter heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds that could reach 40 km/h.

Officials warn that low‑lying neighbourhoods could face water‑logging, while strong gusts might topple trees and bring down power lines. The advice to the public is simple: stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees or makeshift structures, and keep an eye on official updates via the Mausam app, Damini lightning alerts and the Meghdoot agricultural advisory.

Farmers have been told to align sowing and irrigation plans with the forecast, and emergency services are asked to stand by in case of sudden flooding or power outages. The IMD’s categorisation is clear – light rain (2.5‑15.5 mm), moderate (15.6‑64.4 mm), heavy (64.5‑115.5 mm) and very heavy (115.6‑204.4 mm) in a day – giving a useful yardstick for anyone tracking the situation.
