NASA is offering people the chance to send their names to the moon on its first robotic lunar rover, Viper, an acronym for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover. Through the campaign called Send Your Name with Viper, NASA invites individuals to enter their names on its official website before the deadline of March 15, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
NASA notes that the names will be carried to the lunar South Pole along with the rover, also the planned landing site for the first woman and first person of color to set foot on the moon, under NASA's Artemis program. People are able to submit their names to accompany NASA's Viper in its mission to explore the moon.
Nicola Fox, associate administrator and science mission directorate at NASA, stated: "Viper will venture to parts of the moon's surface untouched by prior missions, and we're inviting everyone worldwide to be part of this challenging yet exciting journey." She adds, "Imagine our names traversing across the moon's rugged southern landscape and collecting valuable data to deepen our insight of the lunar history and environment, to pave the path for Artemis astronauts."
Drawing from a time-honored NASA tradition of sending inspirational messages on exploratory crafts, this campaign allows for collective global participation. Millions of names have gone on previous quests, including various spacecraft missions to Mars, Artemis I and the upcoming Europa Clipper mission.
NASA's Viper is part of the broader Artemis program to establish a sustained series of moon expeditions in readiness for the first mission of astronauts to Mars. The robotic moon rover is set for a late 2024 expedition to the moon's South Pole. To partake, visit: https://www.nasa.gov/send your name with viper.
