High-Stakes Chase Across Massachusetts Towns Ends with Raynham Arrest After Cruiser Collision

It began as a fairly ordinary Tuesday morning in Whitman, Massachusetts, but for local law enforcement, things were about to take an incredibly dramatic turn. Around 11:30 a.m., officers approached 39-year-old Roger Depina of Brockton, intending to serve him with active warrants. However, Mr. Depina, it seems, had other plans.

Instead of complying, Depina allegedly chose a much more perilous path: he bolted. Behind the wheel of a silver Toyota Corolla, he initiated a high-stakes police chase that would soon draw in multiple departments and send cruisers screaming across southeastern Massachusetts. It wasn't just a quick dash; this was a sprawling pursuit, weaving through the communities of Whitman, Abington, Rockland, Hanover, Pembroke, Duxbury, Kingston, Carver, Middleboro, and eventually, Raynham. Imagine the sheer scale of that, the sirens cutting through the air, the danger on the roads.

As the chase intensified and the potential risk to the public grew, the Massachusetts State Police quickly joined the fray. Their involvement underscored the seriousness of the situation, adding more resources to the already determined pursuit. This was no longer just a local matter; it was a regional effort to stop a fleeing suspect.

The situation escalated even further when, in Raynham, on the northbound lanes of Route 24, Depina's vehicle allegedly collided with a state police cruiser. A brazen and incredibly dangerous maneuver, to say the least. But even that impact didn't immediately end the ordeal. Following the crash, Depina abandoned his car and attempted to escape on foot, disappearing into a nearby wooded area.

Authorities weren't about to let him get away. A rapid and comprehensive search was launched. A K-9 unit was immediately deployed, its keen senses crucial for tracking through dense terrain. And, providing a truly striking visual, the State Police Air Wing – a helicopter – was called in, circling overhead, its watchful eye scanning the landscape from above, effectively creating an inescapable dragnet.

Thankfully, the combination of ground units and aerial surveillance proved effective. Shortly before 1 p.m., just shy of an hour and a half after the chase first began, officers successfully located and apprehended Depina. A collective sigh of relief, no doubt, for the officers involved and for the residents whose communities had been swept up in the chase.

Mr. Depina is now facing a rather extensive list of charges. These include multiple counts, among them assault with a dangerous weapon (referring, of course, to his vehicle during the collision), failure to stop for police, resisting arrest, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and a marked lanes violation. And let's not forget those initial active warrants that set this whole dramatic series of events in motion.

He is expected to be arraigned in Brockton District Court, where he will answer for the chaotic and dangerous events of that Tuesday morning.
