From Amazon Cloud Engineer to Indian Army Officer: The Inspiring Journey of Shardendu Tiwari

When most of his peers were busy negotiating raises at Amazon, 27‑year‑old Shardendu Tiwari was packing his bags for a very different kind of uniform. The Lucknow‑born cloud engineer, who was pulling in close to ₹46 lakh a year, walked away from a coveted role at the global tech giant – and even turned down a tempting stint with Airbus – to answer the call of the Indian Army.

Shardendu’s story isn’t just about swapping a desk job for a barracks. It’s rooted in a childhood steeped in military ethos. His father, Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari, served 36 years in the Army Service Corps, a legacy that left an indelible mark on the young man. “I grew up watching my dad’s boots, his stories, the pride he wore,” Shardendu later told the press. “The uniform felt like a second skin, even when I was studying code.”

Academically, Shardendu was no stranger to hard work. After completing his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Chandimandir, Haryana, he earned a BE in Information Technology and an MTech in Computer Science & Information Security from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Yet, despite a promising trajectory in the tech world, the desire to serve never faded. He attempted the Army’s selection process a staggering eight times before finally securing entry through the technical entry route – a pathway that lets engineers blend their digital expertise with defence duties.

The culmination of his perseverance came at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya, where he was commissioned as a lieutenant on Saturday. Cadets at OTA undergo grueling physical drills, tactical simulations, and leadership challenges; Shardendu distinguished himself enough to be appointed Senior Under Officer (SUO), a coveted post that reflects both respect and responsibility among his peers.

In Shardendu’s own words, the Army offers “adventure, leadership, and the chance to serve the nation in a way no corporate job can.” While a Rs 46 lakh salary can fund a comfortable lifestyle, he believes the intangible rewards of camaraderie, discipline, and purpose are priceless. His journey serves as a reminder that career success isn’t measured merely by paychecks, but by the impact one leaves on the world.
