Five People Shot Across NYC on Sunday Night – Two Teens Among the Victims

Late Sunday night the city woke up to a series of gunshots that left five people wounded, two of them teenagers. It wasn’t a single incident – the violence spanned from far‑off Far Rockaway to the heart of the Bronx, and even brushed past a group of seniors playing dominoes near Yankee Stadium.

At around 9:15 p.m., a 17‑year‑old boy was hit in the chest behind a NYCHA building on Beach 40th Street, close to Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway. He survived, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and is listed in stable condition. Police say the shooting sprang from a dispute, and the teen apparently didn’t know the shooter – a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Just minutes earlier, an 18‑year‑old teen was struck in the back on East 175th Street at Bathgate Avenue in Tremont, Bronx. A rifle was recovered and two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. The youngster was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and, like the Far Rockaway teen, is listed as stable.

The night also claimed a life. Luis Cano, 29, was found dead with a bullet to the chest around 7:50 p.m. on Lafayette Avenue near Hunts Point Avenue. He was taken to Lincoln Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The motive remains under investigation and the alleged shooter is still at large.

Earlier, just after 6 p.m., two senior men were caught in a drive‑by shooting a few blocks from Yankee Stadium. A 65‑year‑old was hit in the right leg and a 72‑year‑old in the right hand at East 157th Street and Gerard Avenue in Concourse Village. Both survived and are now listed as stable at Lincoln Medical Center. Police have not yet identified a target or a suspect.

These incidents are part of a worrying spike: NYPD data show 22 shootings with 28 victims reported citywide between Sept. 7 and Sunday – more than double the same period last year. The Bronx alone accounted for 14 of those incidents, roughly 64 % of the week’s total. While the year‑to‑date numbers have actually fallen – 471 shootings and 573 victims so far in 2026 versus 520 incidents and 652 victims in 2025 – the recent surge is a stark reminder that gun violence can flare up suddenly and affect anyone, from teenagers to retirees.

At the time of writing, no arrests have been made. Police continue to canvass the neighborhoods, chase leads and appeal to anyone with information. In a city that never truly sleeps, nights like these leave residents uneasy, wondering how many more stories like these will unfold before the sun rises again.
