Dinesh Sharma sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, vows to honour Prime Minister’s confidence

On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu formally appointed BJP leader Dinesh Sharma as the lieutenant governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At 62, Sharma brings decades of political experience, most recently as Uttar Pradesh’s deputy chief minister, to a region that the central government describes as strategically vital.

Speaking to reporters shortly after his oath‑taking, Sharma said he felt a deep responsibility to live up to the trust placed in him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Ministry. “No posting is inherently big or small,” he remarked, his tone a blend of humility and resolve. “My constant endeavour has always been to discharge my duties effectively, whatever the task or challenge.”

He went on to stress the islands’ importance on India’s maritime front. “The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago sits at a crossroads of sea‑lane security, tourism, and ecological balance,” Sharma explained. “Under the guidance of the Centre, I will strive to ensure that our administration works seamlessly, keeping both national security and local development in focus.”

Sharma’s wife, Jayalakshmi Sharma, shared her confidence in a brief interview. “He has always approached his responsibilities with dedication and integrity,” she said, adding that she expects the same diligence in his new role.

The appointment comes at a time when the government is keen to boost infrastructure, improve connectivity, and strengthen defence readiness across the islands. Analysts note that a seasoned politician like Sharma could bridge the gap between New Delhi’s strategic ambitions and the everyday concerns of island residents.

While the lieutenant governor’s powers are largely ceremonial, they also include overseeing law and order, disaster management, and the implementation of central schemes. Sharma acknowledged the steep learning curve but pledged to work closely with the Home Minister and local officials.

As the new lieutenant governor settles into his office, residents and officials alike watch closely, hoping that his promise to honour the prime minister’s confidence will translate into tangible progress for the islands.
