Deadly vehicle attack shatters Berlin Pride celebrations

Berlin’s iconic Tiergarten park turned into a scene of horror on Saturday night when a white vehicle surged into a crowd gathered for the city’s annual Christopher Street Day celebrations. The impact left one person dead and 17 others injured, three of them in life‑threatening condition.

According to police, the vehicle—described as a car or possibly a small van—careened through the central part of the park around 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) before crashing into a tree and coming to a halt. Witnesses say a man stepped out of the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting a rapid police response.

“We are dealing with a suspected Islamist who is known to the authorities,” a police spokesperson told reporters. The suspect has not yet been apprehended, and investigators are combing through video footage and eyewitness accounts to locate him.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, setting up triage stations amid a sea of flashing lights. Eight of the injured suffered serious injuries, with three requiring intensive care. The attack abruptly ended the Pride festivities, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of participants to celebrate LGBTQ rights and commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising.

“It’s one of the worst days for the queer community. I never imagined something like this could happen at our parade,” said Julian Miethig, a longtime attendee. The atmosphere shifted from celebration to shock as the crowd was escorted away and the park was cordoned off.

Germany has seen a spate of vehicle‑ramming attacks in recent years, from Leipzig to Mannheim and Munich, often linked to extremist or mental‑health issues. This latest incident adds to the growing concern over public‑space security ahead of major events.

Police have launched a city‑wide manhunt, urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the LGBTQ community and city officials are grappling with grief, solidarity, and the urgent question of how to protect future gatherings.
