Cumberland Softball Blazes Out of the Gate with Dominant Season-Opening Win

There's nothing quite like the crack of the bat and the smell of fresh-cut grass signalling the start of a new season, and for the Cumberland softball squad, their 2024 debut couldn't have gone much better. Kicking off their campaign with a decisive 12-2 victory over Salem on Wednesday, the Colts truly set the tone. It was a five-inning mercy rule affair, but make no mistake, every single run felt earned and celebrated.

Leading the charge, as many expected, was junior Emily Pierce. What a day she had! Pierce absolutely dominated at the plate, crossing home plate an impressive three times, not to mention lacing a big triple and driving in two crucial runs. Her stat line for the day, 2-for-3, really tells only part of the story; her presence in the lineup just felt electric, sparking one rally after another.

But let's be honest, it wasn't a one-person show, not by a long shot. Skylar Street proved to be another offensive powerhouse for the Colts, also going 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice, and adding an RBI to her tally. And then there was Aubrey Batten, who joined the multi-hit club with two knocks, contributing two runs and two RBIs of her own. It was a true team effort, with practically everyone chipping in to keep that scoreboard moving.

Of course, you can't win without solid pitching, and Sydney Capoferri certainly delivered. She took the mound and went the distance, pitching all five innings to earn the win. Capoferri looked sharp, striking out six Salem batters and managing to limit the Rams to just two runs, even with three walks mixed in. It was a confident start from the circle, giving her team all the support they needed to cruise to victory.

All in all, it was a fantastic way to open the season for Cumberland. Every coach dreams of a performance like this right out of the gate – strong hitting, reliable pitching, and that unmistakable team chemistry. If this game is any indication of what's to come, Colts fans are in for a very exciting season indeed. They've certainly laid down an early marker, sending a clear message to the rest of the league.
